Obituary

Richard Carroll Holt, 96, passed away January 14, 2021 at his home in Springfield.  He was born April 29, 1924, to the late Judd Holt and Gertrude Bible Holt and was the youngest of 7 children.  George Holt, Edward Holt, David C. Holt, Robert Holt, Elizabeth Holt and Mary Ruth Duckworth all preceded him in death.  He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joyce Johns Holt, and his daughter Regina Holt.

Richard joined the U. S. Navy straight out of high school in Morristown, Tennessee during World War II.  He proudly served on the USS Wickes (DD-578), a destroyer that saw considerable action in the Pacific in the battles of Leyte Gulf, Okinawa and Corregidor.

Richard returned to Tennessee after WWII to pursue his B. S. degree in Finance at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville.  He was a proud supporter of the university his entire life and was an avid UT fan, attending many football and basketball games over the years.

The family moved to Atlanta briefly before making their home in Jacksonville, Florida.  Richard worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for many years and was one of the top salesmen in the region.  Upon returning to Tennessee, he continued his career in finance and insurance.

Richard and Joyce moved to Springfield after retirement to be near their daughter.  He loved Robertson County and quickly became an active member of Springfield Baptist Church.  He and Joyce went to the YMCA regularly and made many long-term friendships.  He remained healthy until he was 95 and could often be seen taking long walks in the neighborhood.  He had many friends who knew about his love for food, college sports, children’s charities and organizations to help veterans.  When he decided to give up driving at the age of 94, he donated his vehicle to a veteran through Operation Stand Down Tennessee.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the family will hold a private service at a later date. Condolences may be sent to The Holt Family at P.O. Box 922 Springfield, TN 37172

If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to Operation Stand Down Tennessee or St. Jude Children’s Hospital. All donations can be sent c/o Robertson County Funeral Home who is in charge of arrangements.
