Merritt Baddley Obituary

United States Air Force Retired Lt. Col. Henry Merritt Baddley, Jr., 82, of Springfield, died Wednesday, January 20. 2021 at Select Specialty in Nashville. Graveside services will be conducted  Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 11:00 am  in the Elmwood Cemetery with Reverend Jerry Wallace officiating.

Mr. Baddley was born on December 16, 1938 in Clarksville, Tennessee to the late Henry Merritt and Lillian Owen Baddley, Sr. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son James Merritt Baddley, his maternal grandparents, David S. and Tom Owen, and his paternal grandparents, Hugh and Elizabeth Baddley.

After graduating from Austin Peay State College in 1961, Merritt was drafted into the United State Air Force. His first assignment was to attend the University of Washington, in Seattle, to earn a degree in meteorology. This was the beginning of his 25-year career in the Air Force. His career took him to locations across the country and as far as Guam and Germany, instilling a life-long love of travel. At the end of his career, he retired as the Weather Support Coordinator for the Worldwide Weather Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon retiring from the Air Force, he began a banking career that spanned for 17 years, retiring from Legend’s Bank in Clarksville, Tennessee in 2004. His favorite job though was babysitting his four grandchildren. After retirement he traveled extensively with his family. Additionally, wherever he lived he was an active member of the United Methodist Church. He was a Boy Scout Leader for his troop and a member of the Clarksville, TN Rotary Club until his retirement.

Mr. Baddley is survived by his wife of 60 Years, Linda Head Baddley of Springfield, his daughter Melissa Baddley Gass, his four grandchildren, Caleb, Ashley, Bailey, and Emily Gass.
