Joe Shelton Obituary

Joe Crockett Shelton, age 82 of Greenbrier, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at his home. Graveside services will be conducted Friday, July 7, 2023 at 1:00 PM in Mt. Sharon Cemetery with Tim Harris officiating. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. There will be no visitation prior to the graveside service.

Mr. Joe was born July 21, 1940 in Greenbrier to the late Martin Crockett Shelton and Hattie Pauline Roberts Shelton. He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church where he was a trustee, was a member of Masonic Lodge #9, and a member of Scottish Rites. He was a graduate of Coopertown High School Class of 1958. He retired 3 times, from Dupont, City of Springfield, and Payne Chevrolet. He stayed busy in his free time, adoring his grandchildren and great grandchildren, visiting and talking with others, and he and his wife Martha could regularly be found dancing anywhere they found there was good music. They loved traveling all over the United States with friends from Springfield and Orlinda and reminiscing about those places watching Aerial America. He would spend time staring at the flower garden his wife created for him with the solar lights and hummingbirds. He also had a passion for tractors by spending time watching implement auctions on TV on Saturdays. He loved tractors and his father’s 1969 pickup that he lovingly restored.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joe C. “Jody” Shelton and his sister, Brenda Creasy. Surviving him are his wife, Martha Sue Shelton of Greenbrier, to whom he would have been married 63 years on July 16th; son, Keith Shelton and wife Anong of Murfreesboro; daughter, Pam Atchley and husband Gary B. of Greenbrier; daughter-in-law, Kim Shelton; grandchildren, Joe (Danita) Atchley, Matt Atchley, Zach (Christina) Shelton, Morgan Shelton (Matt Richardson), Jacob Shelton, Cole Shelton, Maddie Shelton, and Samuel Crockett Shelton; and great grandchildren, Avery Jo Shelton and Stoney Crockett Richardson.

The family request, if so desired, for memorial contributions to be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. All donations can be sent c/o Robertson County Funeral Home.

His hope was in the Lord and now he can soar on wings like eagles – he can run and not be weary – he can walk and not grow faint.

Robertson County Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
