Don Hancock

Donald “Don” Hancock, 91, of Springfield, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Monday May 20, 2019 at Springfield Heights Assisted Living. Funeral services will be conducted Friday May 24th at 4:00 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church with Ben Turner and Reverend Jim Woodard officiating. Interment will follow in the Hopewell Cemetery with Andy Benton, Brian Benton, Matthew Hancock, Ben Turner, Landon Parks, and Josh Benton serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Hancock’s fellow Gideons of the Springfield Camp, and the deacons of Hopewell Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at Hopewell Baptist Church on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until service time.

Don was born February 6, 1928 in Springfield to the late Floyd Sylvester and Nellie Pope Hancock. He was a graduate of Orlinda High School, where he enjoyed playing basketball. Don was a lifelong farmer and was a retired tobacco grader with the U.S. Government with 24 years of service. He was a lifelong member of Hopewell Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School for many years, was a choir member, and was elected deacon in 1967. He became a member of the Springfield Gideon Camp in 1982, and he also enjoyed serving on the Robertson County Fair Board for many years. Don was a man who possessed a strong work ethic, which he passed down to his children and grandchildren. He delighted in planting crops and watching the land produce a bountiful harvest. He especially enjoyed gardening and growing flowers, of which he always shared the fruits of his labor with others. He was always in awe of God’s beautiful creation and loved to travel to different parts of the United States. Don was a caring, giving, generous, and faithful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years: Ann Draughon Hancock, his twin grandsons: James Landon and Leslie Dale Hancock, Jr., his siblings: John Hampton, Robert, A.D., and Floyd Pope Hancock, Linnie Bell Edwards, and Jessie Hunter. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter and son-in-law: Donna and Rick Benton of Greeneville, his son and daughter-in-law: Leslie and Lissa Hancock of Springfield, his grandchildren: Andy (Jamie) Benton of Jonesborough, Ashley (Ben) Turner of Brentwood, Lt. Colonel Brian (Ella) Benton of Columbus, MS, and Matthew (Jodi) Hancock of Springfield, his 15 great grandchildren, his twin sister: Dorothy Johnson of Camden, SC, and his sister-in-law: Evelyn Hancock of Springfield.

The family would like to express a special thanks to all the Springfield Heights employees for their exceptional care of both Don and Ann Hancock for the past three and a half years.
