Carol Ann Sletto

Carol Ann Sletto, 76, of Springfield, died Saturday January 14, 2017 at McKendree Health Care. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday January 18th at 10:00 a.m. at the Springfield First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Wallace and Dr. Debra Church officiating. Pallbearers will be Miles Sletto, Jared Sletto, Colton Sletto, Brady Simmons, Jason White, John Rhodes, Austin McNeese and Kenneth Hand. Honorary pallbearer will be CASA representative Marion Jane Richardson. The family will receive friends at the Robertson County Funeral Home on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until service time.

Thoughts from the family
Carol was passionate about her many hobbies and interests. As a sign of things to come, she graduated from East Robertson High School with superlatives "most likely to succeed", and "best all around." A proud alumni of Austin Peay State University, she was active as a student in the Baptist Student Union, and worked several jobs. After graduating in 1962, she struck out to the big city of Washington DC. There she taught special education and business at Suitland High. She married and started a family in 1965. In 1978, she and her husband decided to move to a more familiar place. They wisely chose to move to Springfield. Carol returned to teaching and worked with special needs children throughout the community. She was an active member of Springfield First United Methodist Church. Other interests included the Gorham McBane Library Board of Directors, Robertson County Relay for Life, and serving her community on other various committees. She was the first woman elected to the City of Springfield Board of Mayor and Alderman in Ward 3. Carol was also very instrumental in the upstart of CASA in Springfield, and served on that board for many years.

Carol Ann loved photography, tennis, walking barefoot, computers, feeding her birds, traveling, sewing, family reunions, sports cars, a good cup of coffee, sports in general, and all things Tennessee, including the Vols and Titans. Her favorite sports teams were the ones on which her grandchildren played. She had a generous heart but always played to win.

She was a well known maker of cookies, and sour dough bread. Friends were happy to receive a gift of bread and cookies at Thanksgiving or special occasions. She may have made a few pennies selling baked goods, although there is no evidence she did. Her faults are few but she did cheer for Navy, which no one can explain. She wasn't what you would call well organized, tried to fit too much into a minute, and she would practically do anything for a child.

Her outgoing, compassionate demeanor made her a friend to many. Some traits were endearing such as happy fingers, while others not so much....Politics. As GOP county chair, Carol helped the county embrace different perspectives.

Carol Ann suffered from debilitating health conditions the last 5 years of her life. Please remember the strong, athletic, happy person she was. She knew of her disabilities and how they affected her. It was very hard on her.

Part of mom's character was her strong faith in God which translates in to faith in people. She was not afraid of imperfections and strived to do what she could to help those who were seeking to find a higher understanding of God's world.

Throughout her life she volunteered to care for seniors bringing meals and taking people to appointments. She truly was a servant of the Lord.

People wonder if there is proof of God. Fortunately, we have it because my mother was an angel. God looked after her and loved her as she loved Him.

May she rest in peace. For some reason, I don't think she will.

Mrs. Sletto is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: Shad and Lisa Sletto of Ft. Mitchell, KY, Mark and Angel Sletto of St. Johns, FL, step-daughter: Vickie Neterval and husband Joe of Evansville, MN, brother and sister-in-law: Gerald "Tater" and Dot Tate of Springfield. Grandchildren: Jared, Miles, Olivia, Colton, Baylee, and Kendyl Sletto, step-grandchildren: Jason and Ryan White, seven step-great grandchildren
