John L. Matthews, 95, of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday June 11, 2019 at The Waters of Robertson. Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday June 15th at 10:00 a.m. in the Matthews Cemetery at 4625 Matthews Rd. in Cedar Hill. His brother, Lynn Matthews, will officiate along with Masonic Rites from Western Star Lodge in Springfield. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. There will be no visitation prior to the graveside service.
Mr. Matthews was born February 23, 1924 in Robertson County to the late John H. and Mary Jo Darden Matthews. He retired from CEI in Springfield as Supervisor of Security and was a member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Matthews owned and operated Matthews Meat Locker in Springfield for over 40 years. He was known for his Matthews Country Hams. Mr. Matthews was a Mason and was a member of Springfield Western Star Lodge #9 for over 60 years. He loved hunting, fishing, and all his animals. M
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives: Grace Brantley Matthews and Mary Lou Adams Matthews, his son: John B. Matthews, and by his siblings: Lynda Draper, Albert and Ray Matthews. Mr. Matthews is survived by his son: Clay (Heather Proctor) Matthews of Hermitage, his brothers: Billy Matthews of Springfield and Lynn Matthews of Warner Robbins, GA, his sister: Judy Parker of Alabama, 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
