Calvin Michael “Cal” Porter of Hendersonville, TN and formally of Springfield, TN, died Tuesday June 11, 2019 at his home. A celebration of Life service will be held at 3 pm on Thursday June 13, 2019 in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Eddie Bellar and Rev. Don Hutchinson officiating. Burial will follow in Springfield Memorial Gardens with Jeb Lax, Justin Martin, Chet Lax, Cal Lax, Grady Martin, and Bobby Tanner serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 12 noon until service time.
Cal was born October 13, 1950 in Davidson Co, TN to the late Calvin Henry and Mary Moore Porter. His sister, Debbie Henderson also preceded him in death. He was a member of Springfield First UMC where he served on many boards and committees. Cal graduated from Springfield High School in 1968 and was a member of the school’s first baseball team and quarterbacked the winningest football team in the school’s history. The team won the North Central Conference Championship, the Tobacco Bowl trophy and the Football Officials’ Sportsmanship trophy.
He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corp Reserve. His military service was sandwiched in between his college education, graduating with a BS in Animal Science from UT Martin in 1975 where he was member of the inaugural UT Martin Rodeo Team. He loved to hunt, fish and playing and watching sports of all kinds. Cal loved the outdoors but his passion was his family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Love Porter, his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Mac Porter Lax and Jeb, Manry Porter Martin and Justin all of Hendersonville, a brother and sister-in-law, Stan and Amber Porter of Lewisburg, TN and grandchildren, Chet Lax, Cal Lax, Libby Lax, Grady Martin and Sarah Love Martin.
The family request if so desired, memorial donations may be made in Cal’s memory to the Springfield First United Methodist Church or the Davidson Academy Athletic Department. All donations may be sent care of the Robertson County Funeral Home.
