Jean (Roberts) Slate

Jean Slate, age 95 of Springfield, passed from this life on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at her home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 4, 2024 at 11:00 AM in the Oakhurst Chapel of Robertson County Funeral Home with Bro. Johnny Trail and Bro. Marvin Crouch officiating. Burial will be on Thursday at 1:00 PM in Spring Hill Cemetery in Madison with Cody Smith, Andrew Smith, John McDougal, III, Dakota Slate, Tuff Slate, Ty Slate, Tate Barrier, and Case Barrier serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Slader Smith and Nathan Trail. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 9 AM until the hour of service.

Mrs. Jean was born May 10, 1928 in Bethpage to the late Everett J. and Onie Deckard Roberts. She was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ and had worked at Jackson Park Christian Home and Madison Cleaners. She loved taking care of her family, especially her grandchildren, cooking for others, and the outdoors. She would work in her flowers, do gardening, take care of the chickens, and go camping.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Kenneth Slate; sons-in-law, Mark Gibbons and Randy Berry; 2 brothers; and 4 sisters.

Surviving her are her son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Diana Slate of Springfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean Gibbons Berry of Springfield, Shirley and John L. McDougal, Sr. of Greenbrier, and Bonita and Stan Lillie of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Elizabeth Smith, John McDougal, Jr., Jason McDougal, Toby Slate, Tabitha Carter, Jana Barrier, Amanda Miller, Ryan Berry, and Jayme Berry; 13 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.

The family request, if so desired, for memorial contributions to be made to either Potters Children’s Home or Churches of Christ Disaster Relief. All donations can be sent c/o Robertson County Funeral Home.
