Billy Ayres Obituary

Billy Joe Ayres, age 85 of Gamaliel, KY and formerly of Springfield, died Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Christian Care Center in Springfield. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Oakhurst Chapel of Robertson County Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Bartlett Cemetery in Cedar Hill with Gus Ayres, Jamie Ayres, Brandon Ayres, Bill Burgess, Dan Ayres, and Brent Ayres serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 4-8 pm and again on Saturday from 12 noon until 1:45 pm.
Mr. Ayres was born March 31, 1929 in Robertson County to the late Joseph W. and Anna Mae Durrand Ayres. He was retired from the United States Army with 40 years of service, having obtained the rank of Colonel. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, was a graduate of Cedar Hill High School, was a furniture builder, and loved to read.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Marie Swann Ayres; a son, Joe S. Ayres; and brother, Burt Ayres. He is survived by sons, Dan Ayres and wife, Joan of Springfield and Brent Ayres and wife, Patrice of Glasgow, KY; daughter-in-law, Cathy De Los Santos of Clovis, NM; five grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
The family request memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. All donations can be sent c/o Robertson County Funeral Home.
